There are certain songs I usually avoid listening to because they give me ^Flashbacks.^ Some of these recollections are good; some of them are bad; but all of them are summoned vividly when I hear the specific song which has bonded itself to the memory. Good or bad; they can be very distracting, and sometimes I am in the middle of something where I should not be distracted.
- I try to avoid listening to a song called "All My Life," by K.C. and Jojo; because it was a special song between myself and a special lady. I hear the song, I remember her, and I remember that I had to break it off with her; because I discovered the hard way that I don't have the stamina, faith, and discipline a young man needs when his relationship with a Woman, who truly deserves all the happiness in the world, is a long-distance relationship. She was and is the only Woman I would ever declare as my Calypso. If you've read THE ODYSSSEY by Homer, you know what that means.
- I try to avoid listening to any song by a band called LINKIN' PARK; not because I don't appreciate the talent and artistry those fellas put into their songbook, but because I had a roomate who listened to their dang music almost every minute of every day! A roomate who was unstable, unreliable, and still owes me an apology and one hundred dollars!!! The only thing I can say in favour of that air-wasting space-hogger is that he helped me to figure out that you really do have to make an effort to get along with some people, and figure out quickly that certain arrangements are not made to last.
- Any song that my Father enjoyed is a song I have to avoid listening to-- in public. At the time that I am writing this, the old man has been dead for plenty of years, but I can still vividly remember his love of music. It takes a lot of effort on my part not to break out into song and sing along with those cherished tunes; especially if it is something by Paul Simon or The Beatles. If I am not careful, I can easily start belting out some lyrics about enjoying the photos I get from a Kodachrome camera system, or going on an adventure in a Yellow Submarine.
The stuff that can summon your memories can take you back to sad or funny moments, and give you a brief vacation from the now.
Excelsior!
